Whether it's directed at races with epithets and threats, toward GLBT persons with violence and disgust, against political rivals with accusations of mental illness or "hatred of america", or at those that believe differently than you; hate surprises me everytime I find it.
I keep thinking we've moved past this, that only an easily ignored fringe element still has this mentality. Then I turn on my computer and I find hatred proclaimed loudly on blogs, forums, and articles.
I should be used to it by now, but it surprises me every time.

It surprises me that it surprises you. Why do you keep thinking we have moved past this? As you say, you should be used to it as there is a mass of evidence for the existence of hate in the world. There is also a mass of evidence for the existence of love, tolerance and forgiveness in the world. Hate and love co-exist between nations, within nations, within families, within friendships and within individuals. There is a perpetual war going on within the human heart and it is by no means certain, which of the combatants will be the winner.
