Does the white flight thing happen in the US?
What does "white flight" mean? I'm not familiar with the euphemism.
A term for white city dwellers who are racist and decide to go and live in the countryside to escape mixed race neighbourhoods. In England most non-W.A.S.P.s live in the cities. The countryside is still largely white only. With the car and the motorways (freeways to you), it is easy to commute into the city within about one hour from your rural, white enclave.
That's not necessarily racist. One of the main reasons that I moved out of the city was that my children (who are non-gang members) were being bullied and threatened by gangs, everything from lunch money extortion to intimidation when they did well on tests and excelled. We moved to a small rural community where my children were academically challenged in a public school for the first time.
And weren't afraid to walk home from school.
And weren't afraid to excel academically.
And my family is definitely NOT racist.
Yes, the cities are full of thugs and malcontents - your reason for moving to the country seems similar to mine, though I have no children. Moving to the country for this reason is not "White Flight".
It is easy to tell from your post that you are educated, as am I. I am also decidedly middle class and my outlook on life is not thug friendly. My "flight" from the city was because I no longer wanted to live alongside rough people with views and behaviour decidedly different from my own. To be honest, it was a class based decision because all the rough people were working class Londoners. I am sure that many people would see my reason for moving to the country in as dim a light as I see white flight. Well, we can't please everyone - ho hum.
@ Thoralby: Yes! The "White Flight" phenomena DOES happen here. It is apparent, just by visual observation alone. The denial of this detail in our society is quite impressive.
@BigDog: I am lucky that nothing serious ever happened to me in the neighborhood I grew up in. And that I never joined a gang. I wish my parents would have moved SORT OF, I don't know who I'd be now though...
Bad neighborhoods which are OFTEN black, latin, amongst other minorities are not bad entirely because of the residents fault. Here... The funding is distributed unevenly.
Goliath - Bad neighbourhoods in England are sometimes black, sometimes white, sometimes brown and sometimes mixed. But mostly they are white because the white working class is in the majority. And it is the working classes who are mostly responsible for violent crime against individuals and mostly against their own class. The "good life" is pushed into their faces every day by skillful advertising and consumerism that they cannot afford. No wonder they get bitter and angry and turn violent. It is frustration and a fundamental feeling that everything and everyone is against them. For "everyone" read the middle classes and upwards. And the working class is right - the middle classes (for the most part) loathe, despise and fear them in equal measure.
@Thoralby: I see... very well said. Things are quite different here in North Florida. I am often hired to perform at venues for local government, and fund raisers. Sometimes I wish I had a camera and the opportunity to photograph what I see. The bar tenders, cleaning crew, and wait-staff at these events is almost all African and Hispanic American, in that order. The attendees are of European decent. It is a simple observation of an old holding of positions here.
I have no time for Racial Segregation, people that do should travel more. It's good for opening your eyes...
no time to fight it? think about it? vote against people who support forms of it?
you just ignore it?
Not at all if you read some of what I've written here you'd see that i have strong views on where to start changing things...
just views, no action?
I've expressed my views on media websites & political websites, even had some of my views aired by a Major broadcaster..
But if you can share with what action or what types of action you've taken then i may learn something on Grupthink. That's what i feel would be useful on this site.
Together we stand, divided we fall..
All help welcome!
"I've expressed my views on media websites & political websites"
so forum posts, man that's hardkore
Sorry still un-clear if you have actually done anything yourself!
Please clarify..
oh, i could always do more, but because you're so insistent
I report all local, racially motivated incidents to the SPLC, ADL, and MHRN to help build the incident database, in addition to financial contributions to these groups, I vote, I research my investments and purchases to avoid doing business with companies with known racist practices as best I can, I secretly wish all new births would be interracial ;) and am doing my part towards this end as well
Didn't know what way to take your chosen quote "so forum posts, man that's hardcore"
For a moment there i thought you might be making small of the potential of a sight like this. But that would have been very hypocritical as you spend so much time on here!
At last i see that you can, have a useful comment that contributes to grupthink..
Congratulations
I rated this comment as helpful!
Hope it's not a case of two steps forward & two back again.
This was a useful comment that may be a useful path for others that didn't know what to do about racially motivated incidents.

grupthink (see also: the internet) is not always what you want from it. Don't get your hopes up for consistent pleasant discourse, some folks are just griefers for lulz, sick of predictable, tired philosophies
I have respect for those who endeavor to make a useful difference, Darbus galbut..
