Like it or not, Tom Cruise is a brilliant actor. His performances in Magnolia, Collateral, Vanilla Sky, Eyes Wide Shut were absolutely great.
I'll give you Magnolia, he was OK in that and as he wasn't the lead the film was quite good. But Collateral, Vanilla Sky & Eyes Wide Shut were all well and truly dog **** films. And so where Topgun, Cocktail, and the one that was topgun but in cars. If you liked Vanilla Sky you should try the original Spanish version, far superior.
The best thing I've seen Tom Cruise in was that Scientology interview thing doing the rounds on the net, and he wasn't even acting then. Which is a bit scary, he'd of made a good Joker in the new Batman movie if he could act that insane.
In my opinion anyone can act, you don't need to be brilliant to do it, unless you are performing plays live. Tom is not a brilliant actor, he had a brilliant director, who kept saying cut until Tom got the scene right, Tom is a crazy weirdo.
Cruise is a good actor. I'm convinced that he deserved the oscar for "Born on the Fourth of July".
