If the dog became part of your family first, s/he might be feeling displaced from its place in the pack. If you haven't got time to train the dog to accept its position - bottom of the pack every time - then re-home it.
Which breed is it - or which cross-breed? If it is a large breed that is first and foremost bred to be a guard dog and loyal to one person, it may be unwise to keep it. If it is a companionable breed, friend to the pack and generally happy to be bottom, then it is worth the effort.
Re-homing may be the best option. Killing the dog is not the answer. Just because it is unsuitable for your home does not mean that it is somehow a bad dog that is unsuitable for someone else. If it is a guarding one person type, then someone who knows about that type of canine behaviour and will work with it should have the dog. In the right environment and treated correctly for its breed type, your dog could be very happy and a great companion for someone. You might be better off re-homing and waiting till your child is older and getting a dog suitable for children - not too frail and small - but not big and with a short coat and a soft temperament. Remember, it is not all one way - be intelligent and get the right dog for your circumstances.
Alternatively, you could always re-home the kid!

hmm, you might want to reword this answer, because when i read it the first thing i thought was being suggested was a preferential order of euthanasia.
yes, much better.
Especially the bit about re-homing the kid?
i was always in favour of Swift's "A Modest Proposal"...
With a caper sauce, boiled, when mutton cannot be got. Delicious.
Would you like to take my dog and rehome him? and I will throw the kid there also. HAVE FUN!
