If you know what th eL means, you're a Missoulian, right? (It's a great talking point fo rtourists, out of town realtives, etc.) Over 20 years ago (yes, I'm one of THOSE!) I had some friends form back east visit on a bicycle tour. i told them they'd know they were in the right valley cause I'd put two huge letters up on the hills for them: their initials, an M and an L. they loved it!
so, there you have it: it's whatever you want or need it to be. Personally, and it's because i love Jumbo more, I prefer the L to the M any day! (nicer trail, sweet quiet spot, less strcutured adn regimented and authoritarian than the M!) :)

"I prefer the L to the M any day!"
Agreed.
I was with you here:
"..nicer trail, sweet quiet spot,..."
and this:
"...less strcutured adn regimented..."
sure, why not.
But "authoritarian"? Can you explain this?

the "M" represents the dominance of the University (like, they ticket you if you go to the dog park!) and its influence over Missoula. feels like too much power to me. just a personal thing. i like that the "L" is Lesser-known, and Local... and no one form Loyola Sacred Heart has ever given me a ticket cause I parked at their trail head! LoL
