The meaning of the Shriners' emblem is as follows.
The scimitar stands for the backbone of the fraternity, its members. The two-claws are for the Shriners fraternity and its philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children. The sphinx is representative of the governing body of the Shriners, while the star hanging beneath it represents the thousands of children helped by the philanthropy every year.

Twaddle! Wonder how they dreamed it up- I think they designed it and then tried to assign a meaning to this hodgepodge of symbols.

Artemis. It sounds like they DID add the meaning after the symbols. Since iconic-lly they don't really match their supposed meaning.

From what I see all of these symbols are either egyptian, muslim, or just originating somewhere in the middle east... I mean... they EVEN wear Fez hats.

and they also ride around on little tricycles wearing their Fezzes. I guess they're hard to embarrass. I saw them playing around like this at a Frank Lloyd Wright house they owned in my home town. I heard they trashed the inside and tore out all the built-ins Wright had designed...
