I might feel different if I were rich. In my current reality, I'd probably benefit in some areas and take a hit in others, but it'd probably be worth it in the end.

Is that not the case for most people? I find little evidence to suggest that there is a general philanthropy at work. Whether or not this is a shameful fact is simply not the point. It is just how it is in the world.
