We took in a stray beagle two months ago, and I LOVED him. He was absolutely the best dog I've ever had. He was about two or three years old. Ten days ago, I gave him a bone (I gave him bones every day). I needed him to move to a different spot, and when I grabbed his collar and told him to scoot, he started growling. I persisted, and he dropped the bone, spun around and clamped down on my arm. His teeth sank all the way into the muscle in my arm. I had to hit him repeatedly (in the rump-I just wanted him to let go) before he finally let go. Like your husband, my husband just couldn't allow the dog the opportunity to hurt me again (or anyone else), so we turned the dog over to animal control. We were heartbroken. Later, we went looking for another dog at a no-kill shelter. We told the attendant about our dog, and she said that although most people don't realize it, beagles are one of the most likely breeds to bite their owners or family members. Take no chances with this dog--if he shows aggression, think of your family and be responsible. You must find him a new home or turn him over to animal control. It's hard, I know. We turned ours over ten days ago, and not a day goes by I don't miss him. But unless you are a professional dog behaviorist and you can discipline your family to recognize and correct his triggers or aggressive behavior (for the rest of the dog's life), you have no choice but to let him go.
