I have seen this experiment mentioned on a few forums here and there but no one has ever peer reviewed it to my knowledge.
The magnets he used likely cost so much because he conducted the experiment decades ago. N52 neodymium magnets with holes in the middle are widely available now.
The problem as I see it is finding somewhere to drop them, accurately releasing them at the same time, and accurately recording when they hit the ground.
Where is MythBusters when you need them? I guess it is up to you and me.
