What's the strategy, though? I can't envision the type of person who wasn't going to vote for McCain who will now because he chose an anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, pro-gas & oil, pro-big business woman. That person just doesn't exist to me.

I *can*, however, think of quite a few Republicans who are going to be turned off by the choice of someone who "belongs in the kitchen".

To get the base fired up, for one thing. And that was very successful (at least for now). One thing McCain doesn't do is inspire enthusiasm with the republican base. Secondly, her narrative lines up with what appears now to be a major theme in McCain's campaign: reform. Thirdly, by putting a woman on the ticket, McCain attempts to create a counterbalance to "first time ever" allure of the Obama candidacy.

In short, I agree that "strategic" is an accurate answer. Whether the strategy will work remains to be seen.
