It's all we humans seem to fight about. Our God is better than your God... bah... destroy organised religion and we'd be far better off.

If only there were a way to vote 10 times for an answer....

But seriously, and more logistically, we need to convince people that they are better off without the crutch of religion to affect this sort of drastic change.

Unfortunately, there will always be those people who are too weak to stand on their own, and need to feel that their life has some intrinsic value and purpose, outside of just BEING.

Sad.

Totally holotone. We are animals, intelligent ones (well most of us), but still animals and as morbid as it might be, when we die - that is it.

We're dying one second at a time here.

@istair:
"They struck the World Trade Center, not our churches."

Quite a good point - They know that the "church" of America rests at the altar of capital - The dollar is our god.

But did they not do what they did because their religion (the extremist end of it anyway) says that America is living in sin?

They are angry at America (and Britain for that matter) because in their eyes we do not follow their ideals, we live in sin and we do not 'apparently' respect their religion.

After recent issues here in the UK with the 'new 9/11', we have to look at the culprits again. The culprits for September 11th, Madrid and London were from many countries, some were British, some were Pakistani but they all had one thing in common in that they all were extremist Muslims the believed that the terrorist act they were about to perform was right in the eyes of their religion. The benefit to them of attacking corporate America are side-issues, they just want shock-value. They want people to see their cause and follow their beliefs. If it was just about destroying capitalism or America per-se they could happily start burning down McDonalds restaurants across the globe. They want shock and people to sit up and recognise their 'way'. Unfortunately, we're finding influential young Muslims and people from other races and religions in this country are doing that.

Think about other wars around the World, Lebanon and Israel for instance - think about the root cause and religion is at the centre of it. Think about World War 2, the 'master-race', the Nazis, the Jews. It's all religion. Look at Northern Ireland the protestants and the catholics. Religion again.

Destroy religion I say. Destroy it all. Our planet has too much to worry about than some made-up rubbish about fictional Gods and great prophets. Destroying it isn't possible in the short term, people are to scared to really believe we're here once and when we die that is it and that there really isn't a divine hand guiding their moves through life.

Destroy religion? That is what the extremist say. Congratulation, you all have joined the extremist club.

I'm telling you, this is history. This is the begininings of extremist atheism here. Before I thought that that would be an oxymoron, but this just might make sense. Let me see... The extremist christians want to get rid of Islam. The extremist Muslims want to get rid of Christianity, and the extremist atheists want to get rid of all the other extremist! Beautiful!

Just religion, not spirituality. First though we would have to teach about 2/3 of us what the difference is between the two, so many people don't know.

There's nothing extreme about working toward the removal of such a negative stain on our culture's history.

I agree with holotone. I'm actually not against religion per-se, in fact I do believe there is a God, but when your brand of religion is as corporate as McDonalds and pulls the wool over your eyes causing you to take up arms because others don't see it you way is when things need to be re-thought.

I am not an extremist. An extremist would be someone who goes to extreme measures to get their point across/have people see it their way/deliver their messages. I do however and am entitled to, an opinion. My opinion is religion doesn't work in this day and age in its current state.

Society is now so PC and contrite to these religions that we are eroding the very functions religion was supposed to enforce in the middle ages - law and order. We have people dressing the way they like in uniformed work-places using religion as their mantle. Rubbish. Get rid of it.

This is fundamentalist as said philip098123 . All humans have the right to believe in anything, religion is part of human culture. You have the same right to be atheist as I have the right to believe in someting

It is quite amusing that you all seem to differentiate between organized religion and any other socio political organization. Whether the ideology of a social system pertains to the definition of god or the definition of human rights or even the best way to distribute material wealth, it is still a system that will attempt to grow and propagate itself. Growth seems to usually take one of two forms: the result of synthesis or the result of conflict. The debate over the religion as it pertains to war is merely a narrow view focusing on the conflict related to that particular system's propagation. Fundamentally this is no different than Americans fighting to spread "democracy" or "capitalism" or even "science."
