Psycho is one of the most effective horror films, and is partly based on the crimes of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein. The "shower scene," is iconic because it was one of the most terrifying scenes ever filmed. Part of its effectiveness was due to the use of startling editing techniques borrowed from the Soviet Montage filmmakers, and to Bernard Herrmann's intense and imaginative musical score.
