Ah religion...does anybody else see an angry, tottering dinosaur struggling to breathe in the 21st century?
I see the dinosaur in some ways of practicing religion, but not in religion itself. Religion is not an entity you can separate from human nature.
Yes I agree, but I think that homos are most in Vogue! I'm not sure that hate in general will ever go out of fashion?
Hate is the stock and trade of religion. Does that mean if we all stop hating each other, religion will simply fade away?
No because there will still be fear, & ignorance the underlying components of hate. Are you weeding these out? If so we're getting somewhere.
You can blame some people and perhaps some religions for hating, but don't judge them all at once, as they differ too much. As to hate, I think you'll find that it's in humans and not religion as such.
And where did religion come from Alexander? Oh yeah, I forgot, divine inspiration! Not mankind.
Well _Spin_, that depends on the religion.
From the looks of the "How has Humanity Negatively Affected Our World" poll, it seems that religion hasn't exactly inspired original, independent thought...
There are plenty of religions with original and independent thought. Satanism, new age, FSM-ism, Scientology and <insert your religion here> are some of them. They may or may not blame homosexuals in some way or another, but the point is that the act of blaming homosexuals for anything is independent of religion. To discriminate is, unfortunately, human.

EXCEPT
Christians and Muslims have a book that tells them what to do and how to act that specifically says homosexuals are evil!
Friar_Zero:
The view of the Christians I know is that the Bible doesn't tell them what to do and how to act, but that it's a good guideline. There's a big difference.
Also, the Bible does not specifically say that homosexuals are evil. Yes, there's a place in the old testament that bundles homosexuals together with other "sinners", but for any Christian that has read the Bible, there shouldn't be any doubt that the key message of love, from Jesus, takes precedence over the entire old testament. This is my opinion, of course.
Christianity inspires me additionally to accept and love all kinds of humans, not hating them. It's a good core message.
What church do you belong to? After living my life in the bible belt and seeing one too many fundamentalist protest I can tell you that the bible does tell many christians how to act and what to think.
Nowhere in the new testament does it say that homosexuals are evil? Romans 1:26-27, 1 Timothy 1:10, 1 Corinthians 6:9.
Oh, and the old testament doesn't apply to christians? What about Mathew 5:18 or Luke 16:17?
Maybe you should actually look at what your bible advocates?

Alexander - move to Texas. Go to church. See how your opinions change.
I've seen the skeptics annotated bible before. The comments are generally of a low quality and with little insight. The whole concept of the site is geared towards bashing the Bible. Any text can be ripped to pieces and presented as evil no matter how good it is, using a webpage and a method like that.
Romans 1:26-27 doesn't call homosexuality evil, but does categorize it under "vile affections" and calls it unnatural and unseemly. I view "unnatural" as a meaningless word and the rest as a negative portrayal of homosexuality. But, not anything of this should be a hindrance to love homosexuals as humans regardless. (I'll comment the other verses as well as soon as I find the time and energy, but as I recall they are similar sounding to the first one).
Besides, one of the points of the Bible (from my point of view) is that we all do mistakes (and are perhaps even born without empathy or some other genetic trait we can't help) and that nobody's perfect, but that there are ways to compensate for that.
First, let me say that I have three gay friends and that I'm happy for them when they meet someone they like. Good for them. Although I find it hard to view homosexuality as the natural state (since it doesn't produce any children), I respect and love them as humans still. I don't judge them, and I don't try to fix them.
So yes, the Bible is a tad judgemental when it comes to homosexuality, but that shouldn't distract from the main message: we're all royally screwed (not in a literal sense), but there are ways to make things better, there's hope and there should be lots of love everywhere.
I didn't look up the rest of the Bible-references now (thanks for doing the research!), but as far as I can remember it's the same kind of statements as in the first verse you mentioned. As soon as I can find the time and energy I will comment them as well, if it's of any interest to you.
I don't belong to a church and I don't think it's a prerequisite for being a Christian, but I have been in two "protestant" churches and have gone to a catholic school for nine years previously. I really like the core message of Christianity, I pray and I believe in God, but I don't like the feeling of inflated happiness and togetherness found in many churches. It feels dishonest somehow.
Anyways, merry Christmas to all of you :-)
"...a tad judgmental..."
I would say that condemning someone to hell forever for for any finite action to be incredibly judgmental and immoral.
And no, it is not possible to rip apart any text like is done on the Skeptics Annotated Bible. You have shrugged off what they're saying without looking at it. If you have a book that is supposed to be the innerant word of god almighty and it supports slavery, condones rape and murder, encourages racism and war, and contradicts itself thousands of times then there is something horibly wrong with that book and it should not be used as a guide for life.
The Skeptics Annotated Bible present how a reasonable person with no religious predisposition, whose never heard of Christianity before, would see the bible. You can't shrug your shoulders and make the moral deficiencies, human fingerprints, and contradictions of the bible disappear.
