When it comes to religion, the delete key usually serves best. Maybe it's not exactly right, but still a good rule of thumb.

This is a circular answer, like "I generalize because I generalize". The question is about why you generalize in the first place.
There is over 4000 religions in the world. I don't know much about most of them, so I have to generalize using the data I have about the few religions I have become acquainted with. And the 10-20 local religions I know something of are all quite foolish.

The same can be said of people, but it doesn't make it right or true.
Yes, like I said, it's not exactly right, but still a good approximation. There is over 6 billion people in the world. I don't know most of them. But I have met some people and most of the ones I have met were nice, so I can generalize that most of the 6 billion are probably nice too.
Then, what stops you from making generalizations based on skin color etc?
I have noticed that skin color does not make a lot of difference. So, I can generalize that no matter what your skin color is, you are probably a nice guy, even thought I have not met you. Am I wrong if I make this generalization about you?
Yes, you are wrong in making this generalization, which proves my point. There are many things which are important in my life, but being a "nice guy" is not one of them. (I still feel obliged to love you and every other human though, much because of my religion).
