Certain religions definitely have large concentrations of members in various regions, but geographical area does not determine which religion you will belong to. The fact is that the glut of possible religions and the easy access of information about them (in general) in the world makes it much more likely that you and your neighbour will not share the exact same religion. Furthermore, even within each religion there can be significant differences in beliefs, thus creating sects which may or may not be their own sub-religion (the schismic sects of Christianity are, by no means, a unique occurance.)
