Answer for: Do you think Dolce & Gabbana are out of line with this advertisment?
#1 Nope.
First of all, I think it's more about powerlessness than violence against women. It seems like a fantasy to me. Secondly, it's art-- it's photography-- and the fact that it causes people to have such strong reactions means it's good art, I think. The fact that it's an advertisement for a product? Well... I think there is something to be said for the particular type of artistic motivation inherent in ads. Granted it's not fun, like an old Bacardi ad, but it's still good art.

There is a difference between art and rape. When it causes women to feel sick to their stomachs it make me sick too.
Who is this "women" you speak of?
From my experience with this strange beast, I have found a high degree of variation in opinion from one to another.
That's just me, though.
Are you saying that art and depictions of rape are mutually exclusive?
I have been listening to friends and family. Also there are rape victims in the community of Missoula and else where that find this add heart wrenching. I'm into art as long as it doesn't harm anyone else. Unfortunately not everyone agrees with that opinion.
How does this harm someone? By harm do you mean make someone uncomfortable? Would you make things like this illegal?
That's the goofy thing about freedom of speech: you end up getting offended sometimes.
'First of all, I think it's more about powerlessness than violence against women."
Most violence against women is about power. Rape, specifically, is less about sex than it is about power. I thought this was common knowledge these days, but I guess not. Just because an ad is provocative does not make it good art, or even art at all. And chances are that D&G did not make this ad to get people talking. They made it to sell stuff, most likely under the maxim that there's no such thing as bad publicity. Well, that may be true, but there is such a thing as bad taste, and D&G has certainly crossed that line.
Not all powerlessness is equal to violence against women-- that's what I was saying.
Yes, I think that rape is about power (and sex, too), and violence against women is about power/ invoking powerlessness; I just don't think this ad is about rape. I think it's about powerlessness over desire.
i like the photo, and anyone who thinks otherwise probably would rather watch fox news anyhow...
