I'm almost certain that it's illegal as hell. Of course, you make a smaller dent in things when you run into them on a bicycle. Could still cause serious damage to those who swerve to avoid your sorry self, though.
I don't use a light and I like it that way. I don't expect anybody to see me and that's how I want it. Totally covert and incognito. For this reason I never assume anyone can see me, thus preventing myself from becoming an unassuming target of moronic drivers.
