Let's try and keep this discussion based in reality, shall we?
I'm not sure he'd be the nicest guy around. Do this. Don't do that. Be nice to people, for god's sakes.
I mean, Christ, get off my case!
;-)
The historical evidence of his existance is overwhelming.
Now. whether he was truly 'divine' ot 'the son of God' is another story.
IMHO, we are all divine, and the sons and daughters of the infinite
Torziah - Keep on keepin' the faith!
The historical evidence is overwhelming alright, in the negative.

"The historical evidence of his existance is overwhelming. "
Even though I agree with you, that's not true.
In 'Caballo de Troya' (Trojan's Horse) of J.J. Benitez, the main character travels to the past to meet Jesus in their last days,
A book that is worthwhile to be read, told with incredible realism.
yes i want to meet him, at least then we would know if its all true or not? >>said the atheist<<
are you an atheist because you do not believe or is it because you do not want to pay a tax on religion ?
(or am I wrong in believeing that in germany you have to pay religion taxes?)
If Jesus is not who He says He is... He is either a liar, or a madman. Men do not live and die for a lie. Besides... if you do not believe in Him. Why would you care? Why be afraid of God you do not believe in? King of kings, Lord of lords, Prince of Peace, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Creator!
I do not fear him as I do not believe in him. I believe my circle of life will be complete the moment my body is becoming the component that makes all life on this earth. My mother is earth, my father is water and somewhere in the universe there is a mysterium I would like to get to know and believe in.
"He is either a liar, or a madman. Men do not live and die for a lie."
hAHAHAhahahahAHAH! Oh, man.. That's a good one!
Oh... wait... You're serious, aren't you?
I'm gonna go ahead and give you a bit to think about that statement. If a list of the first 1,000,000 people I can think of off of the top of my head who died for a lie would help this progress along a bit faster, I'd be more than happy to oblige.
well, take Irak... how many died there? does that make Bush a god?
Philippians 2:9-11
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the Name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Guys, someone got a dictionary? I'm lost...
Oh, of course. The bible. I forgot that it is the answer to every question life may present. Why didn't I think of that before?
HeadOn, apply directly to the forehead.

Seeing as my answer has prompted 18 comments so far, I feel compelled, though less than eager, to jump into the fray. While I deeply respect my fellow Grupies, and their beliefs and respect their right to comment as they see fit, I have to wonder why - if you don't believe in Jesus - you didn't just choose not to vote for this answer. What the heck, mark it as lame or inaccurate, but why all the Christ bashing? My beliefs are mine, and I don't expect everyone to agree, but I do hope for respectful discussion.
I voted for it, because I don't mind to be proven wrong. Having voted for it also made me join the conversation for the same reason, though I admit, we have not been nice about it from a certain stage onwards. I appologize.
I'm all for constructive discussion as well, and I particularly enjoy debating about religious issues. There was a time in my much younger days when that would have been threatening, but I'm not naive enough to think that I have the corner on truth anymore or that my faith can be so easily eroded. I know that the Bible and Christianity as a whole can be a tough pill to swallow; I have my own theological struggles, and am hesitant to identify myself with Christianity at large, because so much of what is done in God's name doesn't line up with how I think He would have treated people. Thanks hobbit!
I personal hold organized religion as a whole responsible for a vast majority of the world's ills.
Seriously.
It's with this perspective that I approach religious discussion - Religion has done a few good things, but in most cases, it's a scourge on our society, and should be actively discouraged by those who value the health of our society.
This being said, I don't hold anything against you, or any other believer for that matter. It's the organizations that take advantage of these millions of trusting, kind people that I'm against.
I don't necessarily disagree with anything you just said, but there are many people who believe in and follow Christ's teachings who are as outraged as you are about what "religion" has done and continues to do in our society. I was merely pointing out that sometimes we get into discussions that seem limited to bashing and poking fun rather than debating or presenting ideas and points of view in an effort to enlighten or understand one another.
It is not about religion that Torziah and I would like to meet Jesus (and we will) .. rather it is about a relationship. To me, to seek Jesus is to seek what He wants from me. To honor Him, to love Him, to seek while He still may be found. Organized religion did not provide to me what I receive from my Lord and Savior. He provides it. And I love Him with all my heart, all my soul and all of my strength. It has changed me as a person to do this. I used to have a heart of stone and really cared for no one but me. He replaced that stone with a heart of flesh and I truly do care about people and what is happening in their lives. If were not for the saving grace of Jesus... I would not be here to write about it.
I'm proud to claim that I am a follower of Christ. And I am shocked and dismayed at the state of Christianity in the world. Jesus said that the greatest commandments are to love God and your neighbor. New Testament Matthew 22: 34-40 Just because thousands upon millions can't understand the simplicity of Jesus' message, doesnât make it less true. Although I respect that some people disagree and think he doesnât exist. If you ever put him to the test he wonât let you down.
I firmly agree that I don't have the corner on the truth and my convictions are what I hold myself accountable too. And I'm just as screwed up as anyone else, just doing the best I can. It doesn't matter whether you believe or not, I don't want to change your mind, that's not up to me. And not all followers of Christ are hard lined about things as you might think. Everything is permissible, just maybe not beneficial. Thanks for the lively discussion people.
Many of you may be interested in visiting the website www.notreligion.com. Check it out. I agree with Torziah that there are many followers of Christ who do not believe that the attrocities committed in the name of Christianity were really Christian acts. These perpetrators of pain and suffering might not have done so if they had read the Bible, believed it, and put it into practice. Yes, I am saying that not everyone who claims to follow Christ really does. It would be a shame to discount the wonderful reality of a relationship with Christ due to the wrong (sinful) actions of persons who claimed to be following the teachings of Christ. The Bible calls noble those who hear teachings about God and double-check them against what is written in the scriptures to see if they are true or not. (Acts 11:17) Don't take my word for it; look it up yourself and see what you find.
One of my favorite scriptures:
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:11-14)
And one of my favorites:
"Go up, my warriors, against the land of Merathaim and against the people of Pekod. Yes, march against Babylon, the land of rebels, a land that I will judge! Pursue, kill, and completely destroy them, as I have commanded you," says the LORD. "Let the battle cry be heard in the land, a shout of great destruction". (Jeremiah 50:21-22 NLT)
Another favorite:
Now faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see. (Hebrews 11:1)
Jesus was and still is counter cultural. Our culture says "Show me and I will believe." God says "Believe and I will show you." Ahhh... simple to understand, difficult to do, and the best feeling in the world to experience!
And another:
"The LORD is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and wrath. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and furiously destroys his enemies! The LORD is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished. He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet. At his command the oceans and rivers dry up, the lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade, and the green forests of Lebanon wilt. In his presence the mountains quake, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles, and its people are destroyed. Who can stand before his fierce anger? Who can survive his burning fury? His rage blazes forth like fire, and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence. The LORD is good. When trouble comes, he is a strong refuge. And he knows everyone who trusts in him. But he sweeps away his enemies in an overwhelming flood. He pursues his foes into the darkness of night." (Nahum 1:2-8 NLT)
As a former law enforcement officer and police investigator I have concluded that there is more than ample evidence to convict the historical Jesus Christ of being "guilty" of telling the truth.
"For this reason I (Christ) told you that you'll die because of your sins. If you don't believe that I am the one, you'll die because of your sins." ~John 8.24
I wonder how many of your arrests got thrown out of court for lack of evidence? Go ask a lawyer about hearsay before using the bible in any historical conversations.
Actually, your comment would be "out of order" and qualify as "hearsay" in a court of law. To gain some understanding of the judicial process and the application thereof to evidence concerning Christ Jesus, you may enjoy reading:
