I starting 30 years ago in COBOL as a mainframe programmer. When I first saw hobby microprocessor's Z80A for the home hobbiest, I wanted in so bad I could taste it. I just couldn't afford to. Then the Apple II and Atari 800 came out, then the IBM PC made it's debut. I learned basic and some 6800 assembler (?) and from there went to Pascal and Forth, and Logo.
Then my paying job went more toward the system programming/administration area so I wasn't doing coding much. Then Al Gore invented the internet :) and I was offered a chance to work on a corporate intranet using Lotus Notes/Domino, so I returned to programming and had a blast. I tried to learn Java, but I was totally frustrated by how slow everything executed, so I drifted away.
The experience with web development forced me to learn HTML, JavaScript, CSS,.... I got good practice by buiding my own website based upon PHP running on Linux which I hosted from my home. Another set back, a new opportunity to learn something called Business Rule Management by Pega Systems (PRPC) building applications using mixed web technologies, JSP, web services, Java, and the items mentioned above.
I'm still struggling a little with object orientation, since most of my background has been in procedural based language. structures, but I'm still loving it
