Hey Mr. Tamberin Man makes my ears hurt!
bob writes songs a lot better than he sings them
Bob Dylan's career spans over 4 decades. He has written and recorded songs in many different genre including folk, rock, folk-rock, country, blues, and gospel. He won a Grammy for Gospel Music. He has won an Oscar for "Things Have Changed" from the movie "Wonder Boys." He is enigmatic, he is original, he is derivative, he is funny, he is sensitive, he is an artiist..and he don't look back. He is someone who could have only appeared at this time in history in America.
As for his voice, it may not sound pretty, but it sounds honest. Dylan once claimed he could hold a note longer than Caruso. He cracks me up. I love his music.
Yeah, but Caruso was dead at the time.
No question that his songwriting is legendary,... But his voice is rediculous!!!!!
Yeah, I can't listen to his music at all, but I do like his writing.
I often hear that people enjoy Dylan's writing but not his singing. Its been hard for me to understand that considering i fell in love with his singing and then his song-writing. Im not trying to blow smoke up my ass but I'm a pretty big fan and maybe thats why i feel borderline insulted when some people make comments saying they don't enjoy listening to him... For a second and then i don't care because i have to struggle to get it. Then once I've gotten it, I can say that they must not enjoy how he sings through his nose and that it doesn't come from within him, but goddamn it, it does. I resist the urge to laugh out loud, but just so that good people don't get hurt, lol. Anyways, its a mathematical fact that if I'm a Dylan fan, I'm a Lennon fan, and though John was always a great singer and a good songwriter, i always felt that Bob Dylan was great at both. Thats not to say that they both didn't have memorable lyrics. Also, to make clear that I'm not calling anybody out on disliking him based on a reasonable opinion, i would like to suggest that you explore his music beyond what you've heard, because a lot of his songs aren't that great and sound completely different years apart. Of course, the song-writing is always good, hence my vote. Even when he's not trying, it's like he's being ironic, but I'm digressing. my favorite song is "Don't Think Twice It's Alright", the original version, and if you don't like that because the harmonica is quite piercing, or a better word, exciting, then you may like his later work which i am indifferent to.
I for one don't have a problem with anyone stating their opinion. You're right and I was one who said his voice is rediculous. But no one on this page dissed the man as far as his greatness. He is one of the greatest songwriters to ever do it and occasionally he did sound pretty good depending on the song. Just reiterating that we definitely acknowledge his greatness.
I'm sure my dislike of his voice says more about me than him. For example I can't stand wine, and no matter how many times I taste it, I just don't enjoy it, but I know it has its merits. That said, I hated avocados as a kid and love them now, so maybe I will acquire a taste for him if I keep trying. I'll definitely check out "Don't Think," and I've got I'm Not There in my Netflix queue.
That was cute Torziah!
G thanks :).
