A giant ring around a star, at the right distance to support life. Closer to the star, a group of rectangular plates orbit to create "night" and "day" on the inside surface of the ring. The inside surface area is about as large as 3 MILLION Earth-sized planets. Imagine what it would be like to live on that world! The more you think about it, the more incredible it becomes. The book was published in 1970, and I can't blame the designers of Halo for stealing the idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringworld
