Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church (calling themselves a Baptist church despite widespread distancing by the ACTUAL Baptist churches) and his followers (made up almost exclusively of his family) have earned widespread detest in the last few years by PROTESTING at the funerals of fallen soldiers. Even in the best of times, that's just not cool.

This Phelps character is a demagogue, mentally ill, or both.
That video is freakin sweet, and that's how they operate. They come to a town, set up and get police protection until the counter-protesters show up. Invariably, the counter-protesters are better organized, more well-spoken, and, quite simply, more fun.
The best thing that the Phelpses know how to do is jump into a van real quick for a getaway. But it's nice to see that police were only relatively protective of them.
Heh, they came to Missoula a couple years ago. We mobbed one of their signs with like four other signs to the point where it completely covered their sign. So, he started walking down the street to where there was a police vehicle. I don't know if he thought the cops were going to give him better protection or something, because they just sat there and watched until he leaned over the car far enough to touch it. At that point, one of the cops got out simply said, "step away from the vehicle" and let us continue.
