Is hitchhiking a common thing in New Zealand?

It used to be more common than it is now. I would never hitchhike now. But yes, it is still fairly common. Some European tourists have risked it, thinking it safe in NZ but ended up dead - so it's still not a wise thing to do.

Ouch. Ended up dead by random nut cases, or because of a pattern of violence (e.g., robbery & murder)?
