In America, our money goes to the purchase of guns all the time, whether we like it or not.
I am talking personal purchase... what my government does I cant influence directly... but I would never go and buy a gun for personal defence..
@Hobbit: Do you believe self defense, conceptually, is morally acceptable?
in the line of work (police, etc) yes. I have never been supportive of taking law into ones own hands. I rather secure my house up to the chimney... with an instant link to a security company if I am that nervous.
No, I mean, do you believe it's morally acceptable, or even a duty to defend oneself once attacked? Police, security services, etc. only can come afterwards to take fingerprints and blood samples. And draw a chalk silhouette around the body.
And this is not specific to firearms. If you were attacked by an intruder, and you happened to have a baseball bat within reach, would you pick it up and defend yourself?

TDH: I think that could be said about *every* country in existance.
if I would defend myself is actually attacked... sure... if I would be able to... I am no good at it. but yes, initially if someone would attack me I'd try to get free and run as fast as possible... one thing you get taught early in life as a woman... you hardly ever win against a man... best thing if you feel in danger... run as fast as you can somewhere more safe then you are right now... no point waiting for the challenge. Same thing we got taught in prison and it's a basic rule for the armed forces... try to get somewhere save and ask for backup.
its my best advice to anyone... run... it doesn't make anyone a wimp!
if you cant... every situation is different... it's hard to pass judgment about ones reaction outside that.
Hobbit: If you and I were together, say going to a movie (hypothetically), and we were attacked... would you consider it appropriate, or even my duty, to defend you? (I know I'm annoying you with this relentless questioning, but I'm trying to understand the parameters of your philosophy on this point).
what movie?
SORRY, couldn't help it.
depending.. we see the trouble coming...I'd suggest to run... if close to restaurant or similar in there...if you would be attacked I'd try to divert the attention and then hope you make a run for it... this always depends on the number of attackers and the progress of the attack... to hypothetical to find a satisfying conclusion here... I would not see it anyones duty to defend me... the only duty is to defend those that can not defend themselves. children, people that can't walk etc...
Movie = August Rush (haven't seen it yet, but have heard good things about it)
I'll bring the tissues!
