not to nit-pick but defense of others is not the same as self defense.

The scenario is one where you / I are in proximity of family member(s), and for all practical purposes, it's self defense. As in any other defensive situation, you may be able to run... but my point is it becomes a duty to stand and protect rather than escape (unless of course the attacker is inept, and the family member(s) can escape too).
