I'm just beginning my jaunt through yogadom, and beyond the obvious physical benefits it can bestow, I'm quite interested in how it can help me improve mentally. Yoga Nidra seems like a good path to pursue towards that end; Do you have any specific book / website / teacher recommendations for further exploration?

Most of my instruction has been privately through yogis. Nidra is a cousin of Tantra, and many books on Tantra will devote a chapter or two to Nidra. There's also a lot of overlap between Nidra and the TM movement.

Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati has published a number of small press books on the practice if you can ever find one. I like him because he doesn't weigh you down with his conclusions, merely instructs and allows you to follow. You can find one of his articles online here:

I know many yogis who incorporate marijuana into this practice, especially in the U.S. I found the yoga itself powerful enough to generate the imagery, especially when I first started or when I haven't practiced for a while. There's sort of a temporary plateau between initiation and heavy practice that I've seen a lot of practitioners experiment with - there's a group of Nidra practitioners in Arizona that will incorporate a Salvia tea in heated rooms in order to get their desired effect, which may be counter to the finer points of the practice.
