Children seem to develop a sense of right and wrong within a few years of birth. All societies have some sort of moral code. Where do such ideas come from? The easy answer would be from some sort of Supreme Being. Options?

And they got their sense from their parents. What is "right" and "wrong" is defined by society, for a particular time, for a particular place. There have been cultures that have encouraged cannabilsm, for example. There have been societies that have segrated people on the basis of race, religion, place of origin etc. We may not see this as right now, but the people involved did. [show less]

We evolved to have empathy, but we can make decisions that aren't based on our emotions. Those decisions can be influenced by our social environment, such as our parents and other authoritative figures.
Our sense of right and wrong may be based on a combination of our empathy and what we have learnt as we developed. [show less]

Even the animals have certain codes of conduct, including things that they're not supposed to do. These behaviors have evolved as the species have evolved. There's no reason why humans should be any different. [show less]

We are products of the culture with which we are raised in! God after all exist in Language. So then was it really god that gives you the sense of right or wrong. Or is it the Idea and understanding of god(s) through myth, ledgends and biblical accounts that tell us how to live our lives! [show less]

Please do not be mad! I still beleive in God; just in a different way then most people! If you are curious write me a private message but please don't go bashing me for my beliefs. I am not really trying to bash your beliefs rather just showing a second opption! Religion is Poison is not my quote. This is Moa; communist china!
I'm not mad. I'm trying to get people to think, and I'm also trying to learn about other points of view. It's difficult sometimes when someone challenges my beliefs but faith without challenges is not real faith IMHO.

for definition of "right and wrong".
It might have been better if you'd broken those up into two questions. "Right" and "Wrong" have lots of meanings. In this topic, I would define them in the ethical sense - whether or not your action(s) are in agreement with your current society's code of conduct.
Note that the topic description says "All societies have some sort of moral code." Therefore, I define right and wrong, for the sake of this topic, in that sense.
Note that this is not Good and Evil, which most people would define as universal terms, applicable across societies.
Possibly, in terms of garnering grupie points - but then, where's the debate? Where's the pure joy of discussion? See you there!
