No! Kiwi fruit is always "kiwi fruit." Kiwi by itself refers either to the bird or the person. Saying, "I'm going to go eat a kiwi" will get you some strange looks down here, mate.

Hi kiwipete - thanks for your feedback. I live in Wellington, so I _do_ understand where you're coming from. However, you just need to look at the voting on the answer to see that we (you and I, and other New Zealand based people) are clearly in the minority.

Aoterra - Cool! I would have thought I was the only NZ dwelling person here. We originally moved down to Wellington, but last winter drove us further north to Auckland. Are you a native kiwi?
