How do you sketch or paint a ring "evenly" around a cylinder?

Yesterday I decided to start making "Nay Flutes". I've made four so far. I'll be painting these Nays but I don't know how to sketch or paint a ring around it so it does not look lopsided. I'd like it to be as perfect around the flute as possible.

Mask the line off with masking tape

If the masking tape aligns with itself on the wrap around, you know it's an even line. Awesome looking flutes there, btw...
