Shitting in public

As an undergraduate I took a job as a counsellor at an American summer camp. I was horrified to find that the toilets were in a row and you were expected to crap and have a conversation at the same time - AND NOT MIND. I thought it was thoroughly demeaning - still do. What I found really annoying was that this communal crapping was only for the males - girls and women had private cubicles and could crap in undisturbed peace. It fitted in perfectly with the prevailing mindset of that hell hole - men were men and were taught to be tough and fearless and women were all girly and needed protection. It seemed both threatening and childish to me.
Has anyone else suffered similarly?

When I was a kid I had to pee in the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball stadium. I disliked that all the men had to pee unto what looked like an aluminum wall. That looked something like this... http://www.urinal.net/crawley/urinal3.jpg
What grossed me out about it was that other peoples pee was mixing with mine. I know it was just pee... but I didn't like that for some reason.
Remarkably my favorite place to pee is outdoors... like into bushes (sorry lizards and crickets), or against a tree. Secondly the toilet bowl.
Peeing is different somehow. Shitting makes you more prone and vulnerable. Maybe the dislike of shitting in public comes from some sort of atavisitic resurgence way back from when we were small and furry vegetarians out on the prairie and prey to bigger well toothed carnivorous beasties.
That's pretty gross. Never had to endure that, exactly. Too bad that when boys are being boys, bath room stalls get trashed pretty easily. I think that is why this bathroom was like it was.
In elementary school, we had walls between toilets, but no doors. The doors had long been torn away, as it was explained to me.
