"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
I was about 6 when I had to memorize this to recite at school every morning. I TOTALLY understood the worlds, pledge, allegiance, republic, indivisible, and justice. (NOT!)
And to the flag!!!? No way! I pledge allegiance to no flag... it sounds like some science fiction movie.
I pledge allegiance to my mom! Thats for certain.

I love quotes:
"Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it."
--Mark Twain
"Men love their country, not because it is great, but because it is their own."
--Seneca
"What is patriotism but the love of the food one ate as a child?"
--Lin Yutang
"My country, right or wrong" is a thing that no patriot would think of saying, except in a desperate case. It is like saying, 'My mother, drunk or sober'."
-- G.K. Chesterton
"Patriotism is easy to understand in America; it means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country."
-- Calvin Coolidge
"True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else."
-- Clarence Darrow
