In 1976, Missoula had a T-shirt design contest as part of the Bicentenniel celebration. The T-shirt with the above saying accompanied by a flying rotund platypus-like creature got second place. It has since been reproduced on thousands of T-shirts since then. No one really remembers what won first place. That\'s my story and I am sticking to it. Still can't find an image, though. Many cool things happen in this little city (I use the term city loosely here)

I grew up thinking it was Salish for "the gates of Hell", and this is not meant to be derrogatory as there is indeed a canyon leading into town called Hellgate.

Because of maybe two or three things. One is it's winters aren't nearly as harsh as those in the rest of the state, because of its inner-mountain-ness, and two, it's the home of the University of Montana. I think those two things, as well as probably some of it's own juju account for dang near everything that makes it a unique place. Missoulians are shameless Missoula promoters, generally, and sometimes one tends to lose sight of the other really excellent places around the state, and say dumb things like "it's the only part of Montana where I'd live" and "ugggh, Billings?!"

The deal is it's a party town, a place with an insatiable thirst for beer, a burgeoning nonprofit/enviro/activist scenees, and it's a spot that's been home to a substantial number of good people over the years. It's city government is pretty progressive, it's citizenry are actively interested in preserving the un-developed hills and parks around the place, and you can be desperately poor in Missoula and still have a good time.

On the down side, Missoula still needs to produce a punk band that consistently tours the country and practices regularly. It also still needs a solid rock and roll venue and an(other) Indian food place. [show less]
