It does clearly indicate where sources are needed, or if the information is controversial, and it allows for corrections and updates. Name a news source which does any of those things. With wikipedia there is no such human resource restriction. So most write only on what interests them. That means no one has to jump out of their field to write. My History of Education teacher (or is it Grammar and Rhetoric?) is using Wikipedia articles as learning tools for us.
