I don't say I believe it but if the whole God and soul thing were to be true, the following version is the most satisfactory explanation for me.

We have many lives. Anything that is worth keeping after each death remains and becomes a part of the permanent soul. All the evil and nasty stuff is burned off (that is what hell is for). I am reborn with some lessons learned but still more to learn. Cruelties and injustices I perpetrated in previous lives are visited on me until I learn not to do them again. Each incarnation leads to more stuff worth keeping and less to burn. The soul is built over many lives. We all start with a soul bud from God and it is up to us to grow it. Eventually, we have a fully formed soul that is worthy of being in the presence of God and we do not reincarnate.

Somehow of all the illogical "theories" about the existence of God and our relation to Him, this is the most appealing. The Abrahamic religions don't appeal because they rely on the notion of one life and judgment based on obedience to laws or, in the case of Christianity, on the intercession of Christ. That seems most unfair as it doesn't satisfactorily take into account the external circumstances people are born into. Some people start with every chance of being"good" and some start with every chance of having to commit crime in order to live. Also you have to believe to be saved. This means that all the non-Abrahamic peoples are damned to hell. That would make God an unfair, cruel bastard. Building your soul over time satisfactorily deals with the chance of birth place.

Of course, it is all probably a load of old tosh but if an afterlife of some sort exists, then I hope it is the growing and maturing soul sort of existence - much fairer and reasonable than all that one chance/judgmental crap. [show less]
