After reading the Natural, I have noted that just about every modernist book has a sad ending. Which is the worst?

Anti-climactic is not synonymous with a sad ending. It is an ending that pales in comparison with a previous section that would have made a better ending.
True, but did you read the rest of it, The Natural was a re-telling of Percival's grail quest. I felt the original ending would have been better.
No, it has been years since I read modern fiction. When I read fiction, I prefer classics since they have been deemed the best by many generations. Modern literature may be popular now but in time some will be proven just a fad.
Actually, Malamud is one of the authors they think will be considered one of the "classics" of his era due to such works as "The Natural" and short stories such as "The Magic Barrel." Oh, and I meant read the rest of my answer, not the book.
