After reading the Natural, I have noted that just about every modernist book has a sad ending. Which is the worst?

Revenge of the Sith (what a way to end a series)

Anakin goes nuts for no real reason and becomes Darth Vader. What a steaming pile of Sith.

Book and movie- Harry Potter

Everyone knew how it was going to end. Of course we know who lives, considering she wasted her time writing 7 of them!

Gone with the Wind

The ending was uneventful, it should have ended just after the burning of Atlanta.

H.G. Wells really played a joke on everyone who read his book. The secret to killing the aliens? Wait. The atmosphere kills them. Geez.

Anti-climactic is not synonymous with a sad ending. It is an ending that pales in comparison with a previous section that would have made a better ending.

True, but did you read the rest of it, The Natural was a re-telling of Percival's grail quest. I felt the original ending would have been better.

No, it has been years since I read modern fiction. When I read fiction, I prefer classics since they have been deemed the best by many generations. Modern literature may be popular now but in time some will be proven just a fad.

Actually, Malamud is one of the authors they think will be considered one of the "classics" of his era due to such works as "The Natural" and short stories such as "The Magic Barrel." Oh, and I meant read the rest of my answer, not the book.
