When my son was being verbally and physically bullied, I tried everything. Talking to the other adults, role playing with him, switching programs. Finally, I told him that if it was unbearable, he should pick the leader, get as close as possible while looking very afraid (not at all difficult), make a fist and punch the child once as hard as he could in the stomach. He would be suspended but it would most likely shock the bullies and they would let up. And he wouldn't be unprotected because unfortunately bullying takes place right there with the teacher, bus monitor, dining room aide, all there and seeing nothing until someone goes too far.

It worked but not the way one would think. Instead, he went to school the next day and told everyone from the bus monitor to the principal that I had told him he was now allowed to punch anyone who bothered him. I got calls all day long. But, he apparently went right up to the bullies and said "shut up or my mom said I could punch you even if I get suspended" and, since adults were always present, they laid off.

My middle daughter, on the other hand, had a different approach. On the bus, someone made a comment about my youngest that was mean and/or spiteful. Lisa just glanced up, reached out, plucked the girl's glasses off of her head, broke them in 2 and gave the girl back both halves. I had to go over that night with cash to pay for the glasses and with Lisa to apologize but neither of them were ever bothered on the bus again.
