My dad thought of this one year and thought it was just too funny not to do (I think it came up as a response to a question like, "what do really poor rednecks do on 4th of July?"). It was a sort of a celebration of our redneck heritage (the redneck past that's always nipping at my heels, as Ben Folds put it). Sure, we had sparklers, but it was the Dixie Cup that saw us through the night.

Fabric, not Freedom

You can't fail to know by now--
Congress's job is the opposite of progress,
And shutting down the freedom
Until "we the people" are freedomless

And taking away the right that were once self-evident,
But now the only evidence is that which is okayed by the president
And they throwing out issues that we need to address
And battling each other, we gonna end up addressless

And while the papers are covered with news of the border
News of the war, scandal, corruption, STILL there is more--
The shit the papers don't print,
Things that'll get the fires lit,
Takin away freedoms, and the masses don't hear it

Like when they get 59 senators to co-sponor a bill
To change the constitution and try to repeal
Slowly, but surely, the first amendment
To protect a piece of fabric---

Why is some fabric's more important than the freedom for which it stands?
Why isn't this shit in the hands of the people who inhabit these lands?

It's a long, hard spiral, and most of us are too far gone to give a shit anymore
