Turn a blind eye. Why do many people do this so often?

I'm thinking in term's of other peoples suffering & hardship.
What enables all of us to do this, even though helping others often helps us feel better within ourselves?
Why do we wait until the festering problems of the world reach us?

Sometimes it is hard to handle the complexities of everyday life. I think we all mold our own reality and decide subconciously which bits to filter out.
