"Heath Robinson type of constuction" is for want of a better description.
You know the kind of thing: You start a ball bearing rolling which knocks over a domino which in turn hits something else and so on.
Totally pointless but kind of fun.

Thanks chromiqula, Rube Goldberg is the american version of Heath Robinson I guess. I´ll add him as a tag.
From what I'm reading, the phrase "Heath Robinson Contraption" predates "Rube Goldberg Machine" by about 18 years, though you're spot on with him as the American version. To be honest, though, I'd never heard of Heath Robinson until today, and I've enjoyed looking at various RG machines since I was young. As soon as I saw your description, though, I knew what we were talking about.
