Bilingual Education: Schools may conduct classes in Spanish or other languages using federal Title VII funds, which totaled $380 million last year (1% of total spending). 13% of K-12 students speak a language other than English at home. Generally, liberals favor bilingual education while conservatives favor official English.

The United States doesn't have an official language, and doesn't need one.
Look at this article about the problems that France has with it's language policy: http://en.wikipedia....icy_in_France
An official language wouldn't solve anything, it'd just make things worse.
P.S. it would get exacerbated by the multitude of dialects. Imagine Trent Lott & Ted Kennedy trying to argue over official punctuation.
Canada has 2 official languages and we do not teach either to the extent they should be. In Quebec they do not learn enough english in the rural areas. In the rest of Canada we do not teach enough french.
It is a sad state. :(
Does RISC count as a second language?
Sure, it saves money
