It's as big and often brighter than the "M". Are we trying to put the whole alphabet on our hills?
In virtually every defining photo Missoula, the "M" is prominently placed in the composition. The "M" represents the University of Montana, which strongly influences the Missoula culture and economy.
Unless you live in Missoula, you may not be aware that just to the north of the M, is another large, white letter that looms over the city: The "L". It's harder to find professional photos of the "L", probably because tt causes more confusion than anything else. Photographers generally try to keep it out of the scene.
In a city called Missoula -- in a state called Montana -- what is an "L" doing up there?

What in the hell does the "L" stand for?
Seriously, I have no clue...
Loyola High School
My point exaclty... even Missoula residents don't know why it's there.
Had the fire burned a little faster, and that the "L" was paper, we would not be having this discussion
What? The Christian high school gets a letter?
Goddamnit, where's my "C"?
I seem to recall from my childhood that Missoula used to have an 'H' and a 'S' for the other high schools in town.
When I look at the 'L' it brings back very fond rivalry memories....
The "L" is made of poured concrete, just like the "M". Before I say get rid of it, tell me how it's going to be done without messing up the mountain side , adding to erosion or use of heavy equipment.
Monogramming mountains is a dopey Western custom that goes way back. It's quirky like so much of Missoula. It doesn't really offend me that much.
Fun Fact: The "M" is made up of about 3,000 cubic yards of concrete. When I was a student at UM, somebody tie died it. Another time, someone (alledgedly Native Americans protesting the jailing Leonard Peltier?) streaked it with red paint.
I'm with Jamsterson on this one.

âI have been working hard to teach people that putting signs on Mount Sentinel (and Mount Jumbo and the North Hills) is destructive to the native prairie plants that live there.
âThis is especially true in spring, since all the wildflowers and bunchgrasses are waking up. Putting up signs causes erosion, cooks the plants under the sign material, and usually there is a bunch of garbage left behind because no one ever wants to take down the sign.â
