Where did you get your concept of hell?

I'm wondering where we have all gotten our notion of what hell is (if you believe that there is one, of course). Did you read Dante's Inerno? Did you hear it from the pulpit? Did your Grandfather lecture you and put the "fear into you?" Very few people seem to get their view of hell from the Bible, which begs the question, "Is hell a place of eternal torment, or is it a tool created by religious leaders to scare people into modifiying their behavior?" If the latter is true, God has really gotten a bad rap.

(For those of you who answered "My own imagination," this clarification information is new - what are you basing your images on? How did you know there was a hell to imagine?"

If you believe in heaven and hell..... Then I think they are different for every person and should/could be tailored to each persons desires and fears.....

The Catholic church

Catholicism is all about guilt and hell. Redemption is only offered as an alleviation of this.

John Milton's _Paradise Lost_: his description of hell? "Darkness visible." And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac

Basically, it's like this place... except, there's no greater power. Humans just do what they feel when they feel. Heaven is so... [show more]

The icy darkness of the Scandinavians seems a more appropriate version of hell to me. Hell is on earth anyway created by humans daily.

I'm glad Dante is an answer here, because Dante is responsible for the way hell is conceptualized around the world. Before Dante Hell was not a major part of the Christian belief system. Now it's the main emphasis, really.
