Who are the best and/or most influential female songwriters?

A while ago, I drew up plans to teach a poetry course that included music (from any genre) as a form of poetry. It was easy to list influential male songwriters from the last century, but adding females to the list was difficult. Their have been great female singers, but many of the more well-known ones didn't write their own music. So who were the great female songwriters? From any genre, from any time period.
