I got my feet wet with computer programming in middle school. Of course programming is an abstraction itself but back then even the concept of learning a languege was an abstract concept. What the heck were we going to program? I tried to make my own version of Space Invaders. It didn't turn out like a game. I think I got some letters to fall from the "sky" though. I guess that was a pre-cursor to the matrix.....not taking credit but that effect is like a daydream of code. [show less]

I was able to use the computers at the local university. They had one of the first computer labs for kids with touchscreen games it was circa 1977-1978.

In my 8th grade BASIC Programming class.

as basically a new version of the typewriters useful only to clerical staff.

It was a PDP 11/70

and it was all in a new language: German.

I decided to take the time to write a program/game named "Renegade Robot" from a computer magazine. It took the entire weekend since it was about four pages of code.

I couldn't wait to see robot that was portrayed in the side notes of the magazine! It was 3-D and was shooting a Laser! It was Sunday evening when I finished it.

I found myself being an X chasing an O amongst sparsely placed T's. I played it for about five minutes. I felt duped.
I took a deep breath, and turned off the computer.
