What is your favourite fictional idea or concept?

There have been ideas in books that have taken my breath away with their sheer creativity and imagination.

What idea in a piece of fiction has left you similarly "awe-struck"? What imaginative construct has inspired you with its audacity?

It can be something concrete, say an invention which doesn't yet exist or an incredible philosophy or religion or some other abstract idea.
