Self defense using violence: A duty? Morally acceptable? Morally wrong?

Don't confine your thoughts to a specific weapon, such as a gun. But consider using deadly force, by whatever means available, to defend oneself (or family) when attacked or threatened. Some consider this a right, maybe even a duty. Others are not so sure.
