Senate Bill 1959 to Criminalize Thoughts, Blogs, Books and Free Speech Across America

I read the legislation, which adds a (scary sounding) commission to the DHS. Even though it doesn't enact into law any new coercive powers *initially*, it sets up the scenario where the commission could recommend unpleasant measures.
My question is why more democrats didn't oppose H. R. 1955? I guess only 6 house members voted against it (at least one of which was a republican - Ron Paul). There was a lot more Dem opposition to "The Patriot Act", and other legislation...

Bloodniece, I assume you mean Martial Law...
(sorry, I majored in English and it warped my brain).
MDA, you really majored in English? You're certainly very well-rounded if you did. I hate to admit it, but I'm a conservatory dropout with a degree in nothing.
Yes, english for a few semesters, then I switched schools, and changed my focus to computer science.
md - you say that as if it's a bad thing.
No bad things. I love prose, composition, and computers. It's all good. I just discovered an aptitude along the way, and realized I could make a lot more money at one than the other.
I think I meant marshmallow law. Ooops! Thanks for the clarification. For the record, I welcome our fascist lords and masters and really don't believe this would or could happen, but I believe this deserves some thought. Oh, I was an art major if that explains anything.
Art major explains everything!
As deplorable as the political climate in this nation may be, there are far worse places to go.

Sorry dude, but "I can think of something worse" doesn't really help when the NeoCon Guard come a knockin'...
Holy Shit.
I can't believe this! Why are you guys still in the States? We have better green (for you holo) and better health care (for u david) and even some interesting mushrooms (for skritchy). I'm so glad that the worst my government is trying to do is lower the general sales tax and prevent the gay population (mostly unsuccessfully) from gettin hitched.
One reason I'm not in Canada is because I was deported from there (Fort Francis) a number of years ago. Back when marijuana possession was considered a bit more serious than it is now. And I haven't gone through the hassle of journeying to a Canadian consulate to fill out the paperwork for re-entry. Someday I'll get around to it, though.

According to this website: http://www.huffingto...b_41674.html, martial law will be enacted in the event of another major terrorist attack. Since Bush is so unpopular globally and in the US, he is the terrorists greatest Allie and the terrorists will do all they can to keep Bush as president. Thus if there is another attack and Bush is not the target, the terrorists will win in every way if Bush suspends the elections.
